Knocking off the seventh-ranked team in 8-player was the goal for WACO on Friday for homecoming, but the Warriors fell short in accomplishing such feat in a 55-20 loss to Montezuma.
WACO was in for a fight early, scoring the game’s first points on a Will Edeker to Zach Schmitz touchdown from 34-yards out. After a pair of Brave scores, Edeker scampered five-yards in for a touchdown early in the second to trail just 13-12. The light switch went off for the Braves, as they rattled off seven straight scores to open a 55-12 advantage by the third quarter. Head Coach Chad Edeker described the turning point in the game. “In the second quarter we had a touchdown called back because of a holding penalty. A big play with a lot of momentum and to look back to see the flag at midfield it just took the air out of us. They immediately scored, we threw a couple interceptions, and we could never fully recover.”
Drew Diers had the final touchdown for the Warriors on a five-yard run. Montezuma (6-0) quarterback Eddie Burgess had his way completing 17 of 23 passes for 239 yards and five touchdowns. WACO had 199 yards of total offense and Jonah Clark had 47 on the ground. Edeker led the defense with five tackles.
WACO drops to 3-3 and they travel to Winfield (3-3) for a country rivalry game on Friday to close the regular season.
