It was a long time coming for Sigourney-Keota football faithful, but the Cobras added another district banner to their resume with a 68-8 drubbing of Cardinal on Friday to cap off a perfect regular season.
Cardinal was the last team standing in S-K’s way from capturing their first district title since 2010, but it didn’t take long to get past this final hurdle. A 13-8 Cobra advantage after one was extended to 42-8 at the break with four second quarter touchdowns. The defense shutdown a potent Comet passing attack and continued to pile on in the second half en route to their sixth consecutive double-digit win. The run game torched the Comets, as Sigourney-Keota finished with 461 rushing yards including Sam Sieren having 155 yards and a score while Cade Molyneux ran for 120 and two touchdowns. Molyneux, Sieren, and Colton Clarahan teamed up to each throw a touchdown and finished a combined five of eight for 169 yards. Josh Mohr was on the receiving end of two of those for 58 yards and Brady Duwa had the other from 80 yards out. Levi Crawford led the defense with 5.5 tackles and Matt Brainard recovered a fumble and took it 25 yards to the house.
Head Coach Jared Jensen tells KCII Sports what this title means to the group. “S-K has had really great football teams in the past and I think it is every kid’s goal to get back to that championship level. This group of seniors have put in that work and that has been their goal. For these kids to be in that select group of district champions here at S-K is absolutely amazing.”
The Cobras finish the regular season 7-0 and received a bye in the first round of the class 1A playoffs. They will host the winner of Cardinal and Pekin on October 23rd.
