Energy assistance program applications are being accepted for some individuals in Iowa at this time. The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, also known as LIHEAP, assists low-income families with heating their homes during Iowa’s winters. Applications are currently being accepted for people over 60 years old and for those with a disability. The application period for all households opens November 1st. The program helps pay a portion of residential heating costs for eligible households. According to Hawkeye Area Community Action Program (HACAP), which serves Washington County, the benefits are often in the form of a credit applied to the utility company’s heating bill.
All households that apply for LIHEAP also apply for the Weatherization Assistance Program. The weatherization program helps improve houses for people on fixed incomes and children living in low-wage households by assisting with projects that will help reduce the utility costs.
