A pair of KCII area teams will square off tonight in the opening around of the class 1A regional volleyball tournament when Winfield-Mt. Union hosts Hillcrest Academy. The Ravens come into the game with an overall record of 3-19. They were last in action a week ago at the Washington tournament where they went 2-2 with wins over Sigourney and Highland and losses to Regina and the Demons. On the season, the Ravens are led by Esther Hughes with 117 kills, sixth most in the Southeast Iowa Superconference North Division. Yani Gutierrez has 119 assists, eighth in the conference while Grace Miller leads the Raven defense with 235 digs, fourth in the SEISC North.

Winfield-Mt. Union enters play with an overall record of 21-6, the Wolves finished as division champs of the Superconference North with a perfect 8-0 record. It’s WMU’s first conference title since 1996. In their last match, the Wolves swept Mediapolis in straight sets to claim the division championship. On the season, WMU is led by Jenna Buffington with 252 kills. She is the leader of the Superconference North Division. Keely Malone has 263 assists, fourth in the Superconference. Kyndal Townsley has a team best 200 digs, fifth in the Superconference North. These two teams have met twice this season with the Wolves sweeping both matchups in straight sets. The Wolves have won six straight in the series. Action begins tonight at 7p.m. at Winfield-Mt. Union High School.
