Parents are reminded to talk to their teenagers about safe and responsible driving during National Teen Driver Safety Week. According to the Iowa Department of Public Safety, the risk of a fatal crash goes up in relation to the number of passengers in a car. Also, among teenage drivers who were involved in fatal crashes in 2018, 10% were listed as distracted. Washington County Sheriff Jared Schneider gives some recommendations on how parents can approach the topic, “For teenagers, it’s one of those things that you need to have a conversation with them and let them know the importance of number one, the laws for kids and driving with their phones. Then number two, limit the number of passengers you have. I think with teenagers, the biggest thing is the more kids you get in a car, the chances are you’re going to have that peer pressure to do something that a kid wouldn’t normally do when they are driving in the car by themselves.” Distracted driving can have fines anywhere from $100.50 for a simple ticket up to $100,000 and time in prison if an accident results in the death of an individual. Drive safe, prevent peer pressure and distracted driving, and focus on the road ahead of you.
