The Winfield-Mt. Union volleyball team is back on the court Wednesday to face Burlington Notre Dame in the quarterfinal round of the class 1A volleyball tournament. Winfield-Mt. Union comes into the match after receiving a forfeit in the opening round Monday when Hillcrest Academy was unable to participate in their match with the Wolves due to COVID concerns. The Wolves are 21-6 overall, they went a perfect 8-0 in the Superconference North Division, taking home their first league title since 1996. On the season, Winfield-Mt. Union is led by Jenna Buffington with 252 kills, most in the Superconference North. Keely Malone leads the Wolves with 263 assists fourth in the conference. Kyndal Townsley leads the Wolves defense with 200 digs, fifth in the north.
Burlington Notre Dame has an overall record of 14-5. The Nikes were 5-3 in the Superconference South Division. They swept Wapello in the opening round of the playoffs on Monday. For the year the Nikes are led by Gabby Deery with 219 kills, fifth in the Superconference South. Jenna Bentz has the team lead with 263 assists, eighth in the conference while Molly Johnson leads the Notre Dame defense with 183 digs. These two teams last met in 2019 with the Nikes sweeping the Wolves. Notre Dame has won three straight in the series with the Wolves last victory coming in 2012. The winner of tonight’s game advances to the class 1A regional semifinals. Action starts tonight at 7p.m. at Winfield-Mt. Union High School.
