Folk and spiritual music will be presented by the Washington High School Concert Choir this week outdoors. Choir Director Jon Runaas shares the choir has been mindful of COVID-19 safety measures this school term. Due to COVID-19 the choir’s usual accompanist has been unable to join, so he’s found a way for the students to adapt and learn, “And so all the songs for this concert are going to be a capella. Which is actually a really wonderful thing because I love the learning challenges of a capella music for a choir.”
He explains why the concert has been moved outdoors, “Currently all concerts are on a case by case basis. We’re trying to balance the safety of our singers and our audience members with our desire to share what we’ve been learning with our community. Certainly, all the concerts are going to be greatly modified from years past. For example, this coming Thursday we’ll be singing at the Washington town square bandshell because current research suggests that singing outdoors is safer for both the singers and the audience.”
The concert will be Thursday at 6 p.m. in Central Park and they are working on options to provide a livestream of the concert for people to observe remotely. The high school concert choir will perform for 20-25 minutes.
