The Sigourney-Keota Cobras put their unbeaten record on the line tonight when they host the Dyersville-Beckman Blazers in the round of 16 of the class 1A state football playoffs. The Cobras come into the night with an overall mark of 8-0. They were champions of class 1A District 6 and are ranked No. 3 in class 1A in the final Associated Press poll of the season. They were 49-0 shut out winners over Cardinal of Eldon last week. In the victory, SK was led by Sam Sieren with 17 carries for 147 yards and five touchdowns. On the season, the Cobras are led by Cade Molyneux through the air at 26 of 35 for 448 yards, seven touchdowns to just one interception. His favorite target is Brady Duwa with 13 catches for 310 yards and six touchdowns. On the ground Sieren leads the charge with 101 carries for 1,056 yards and 17 touchdowns. His yards total is seventh in the state, his 10.5 yard per carry average is fourth and his touchdown total is third. Jack Clarahan leads the Cobra defense with 44 tackles.
Dyersville-Beckman comes into the night with an overall record of 6-2. They were champions of class 1A District 5. They escaped the last round of the playoffs, scoring a come-from-behind victory in the final two minutes against Durant 19-14. On the season, the Blazers are led by Nick Offerman through the air at 72 of 149 for 1,216 yards, 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. His favorite target is Trent Koelker with 39 catches for 700 yards and eight touchdowns this year. On the ground, the Blazers are also led by Offerman with 107 carries for 593 yards and 11 touchdowns. Defensively Beckman is paced by Owen Huehnergarth with 43 and a half tackles, including eight and a half for loss. This week, Sigourney-Keota head coach Jared Jensen talked about his team and broke down the Blazers. “They are a big group up front. That size is something we have to be able to handle. We have to be able to hold our ground and get to our gaps to make plays on both sides of the ball. Statistically, they are a running team. They have a 225lb tailback and a very elusive quarterback. They have a similar philosophy to us, if you can get three and a half yards a play, you’ll do a good job moving the chains. Defensively, we’ll have our hands full but I think we have the skill guys in the back end to cover their skill guys and our guys up front have played well all year. Turnovers on both sides of the ball will be key. We need to take it away and continue to do a good job on our end of holding on to the ball. We can’t give them extra opportunities to score.”
These two teams have never met on the field. The winner of this game moves to next week’s state quarterfinals and is one step away from the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.
