A magical season came to a screeching halt last night for the Washington football team, as the #4 ranked Demons were knocked out in the Round of 16 by falling to #9 West Delaware 47-14 at Case Field.

As heard on KCII, the Demon defense held their own in the first by forcing a turnover on downs deep in their own redzone and another possession where Wilx Witthoft had a 50 yard interception that set the offense up for prime field position. Unfortunately for the Demons, sustained success on that side of the ball was few and far between and they were held to just one first down in the opening half. The Hawks broke through late in the first quarter on a five yard touchdown run by Jared Voss and the floodgates opened up after that. They tacked on a pair of scores in the second to take a 21-0 lead at the break. A turnover right out of half led to another Hawk score and the hole was too steep to climb out of. Washington would get their only touchdowns on back-to-back drives in the fourth when Trashaun Willis connected with Wyatt Stout from 37 yards out and then Willis found Spencer Sotelo from 51 yards.

Head Coach James Harris was proud with how his team continued to fight until the final whistle. “They showed a lot of character and I am really proud of them for that. A lot of teams could have packed it in being down by a lot, but our guys were able to get a pair of scores on the board. We did some good things tonight, but ran into a great team that outplayed us. Hats off to a well-coached football team.”

Voss finished with 164 rushing yards and four touchdowns for the Hawks while adding one more through the air. Willis completed eight of 19 passes for 130 yards and two interceptions. Stout tallied 61 yards on the ground and Sotelo had four receptions for 86 yards.

The Demons conclude their season 8-1 and bid farewell to a loaded senior class of 20. West Delaware moves to 10-1 and faces off with North Scott in a class 3A state quarterfinal next week.
