The City of Kalona is working with HACAP once again to offer a “pop-up pantry” for those in need of food in time for Thanksgiving. Kalona City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh says their goal is to have 200 food boxes available to distribute to Kalona-area residents facing food insecurity, “It affects a lot of people right now and the holidays exaggerate that and stress that out a little bit more, so hopefully the efforts from the city council will be able to lessen that stress over an already stressful time.” Schlabaugh says drive-thru pickup will be available on a first-come-first-served basis Wednesday (11/24) from 4 to 7 p.m. at the City Shop at 711 A Avenue. Schlabaugh says they don’t ask for a residence requirement or proof of income to receive a food box. He says he hopes the city’s efforts can be one more way to help those in need, “This is more so a supplement to all of our food pantries that are kind of the staples for food distribution. We’re trying to fill that need right now, but we’d ask that they continue to utilize those as well to make sure and help get the food they need from them on a consistent basis.” Schlabaugh says the city hopes to do another “pop-up pantry” closer to Christmas.
