For the first time since the derecho, Iowa’s weekly unemployment figures saw an increase from the previous week. According to Iowa Workforce Development, Iowa’s continuing weekly unemployment for the week ending November 21st was 37,112 claims. That’s up 2,310 people from the previous week. IWD states 43.6% of the claimants last week indicated their unemployment claims were not COVID-19 related. November through February are traditionally when Iowa has the most unemployment claims.

Last week, unemployment benefit payments added up to nearly $10.3 million with the top five industries for claims being manufacturing (1,622), construction (1,271), self-employed or independent contractors (1,245), health care and social assistance (920), and accommodation or food services (780).

Due to the recent Proclamation of Disaster Emergency from the Governor, IowaWORKS Centers have temporarily ceased in-person services and people are encouraged to visit IowaWORKS.gov.
