A house north of Kalona is considered a total loss after a fire occurred Saturday.
Kalona Fire Chief Jerry Zahradnek says the department responded at about 6:30 p.m. to a house fully engulfed in flames at 5060 Derby Avenue. Firefighters were on the scene for about three hours. The Riverside, Wellman, Hills, Oxford and Tiffin fire departments all assisted at the scene. Zahradnek says the mutual aid was needed mostly to bring in water to fight the blaze since the nearest water source was about 13 miles away. Three people were displaced by the fire, but no one was home at the time of the fire. The cause of the fire is undetermined and the investigation has been turned over to the State Fire Marshal.
