Another season on the mat starts up today for the Washington wrestling team when they host three schools for a quadrangular.

The Demons will welcome Iowa Valley, HLV, and Benton Community to kick off the 2020-21 campaign. The Demons have lower numbers this year, but will be led by lone senior Ayden Frazer. The projected 170 pounder had a big junior campaign where he went 32-4 and just missed out on a state appearance. The Demons will have to navigate without returning state qualifier Brayden Hartman, who is out due to injury. Other wrestlers bringing back significant experience include Jacob Hill, Robert Bennett, Jack Kleese, and Curtis Stender. Incoming freshmen include Lane Schrock and Chase Greiner.

Head Coach Brent Van Weelden tells KCII Sports what the team has been focused on in the preseason. “We have been getting back to the basics working on our feet. Mostly it has been working on our setups, our takedowns, neutral defense, and getting into shape. We have been lifting weights and getting back into the routine that we are used to being in.”

The meet gets underway at 6 p.m. tonight in Washington. Spectators are limited to two per athlete.
