Like several area public libraries, the Wellman-Scofield Library has had to alter operations due to COVID-19.
With the recent rise in coronavirus cases, Wellman-Scofield has closed the doors while offering curbside-only checkout of books during regular business hours. And while parents can checkout books for their kids, Library Director Carol Wilkins says fostering a love of reading can be easier when the kids can come inside the library, “The kids like to come in, they like to pick out their own books, they like to look at the new books. We have puzzles and games also for them to checkout. It’s important for them to pick out something that they like and there’s nothing more pleasing than to see kids come in and get excited about their books.”
Working at a small-town library, Wilkins says she misses her usual interactions with local kids and adults.
In addition to limiting the library’s operations, the pandemic has also impacted their event calendar. Their annual gingerbread house making contest has gone virtual and this year’s “Letters to Mrs. Claus’ campaign is now a drive through event.
