The first girl/boy doubleheader of the season is tonight for the Washington basketball teams when they welcome Pella for a pair of non-conference games.
The Demon girls seek their first win, as they sit at 0-3 including falling to Centerville last night 64-43. Greta Rothe led the way with 13 points including going three of six from long range. Senior Anna Nacos chipped in with 11 points. Pella is 1-2 out of the Little Hawkeye Conference and coming off of a 12-11 campaign last year. Madison Naig is their top scorer with 40 points in the three games and Annika Peterson has hauled in 23 rebounds.
There will be no shortage of offensive firepower in the boys’ game with both teams looking to stay unbeaten. Washington got the season started on the right foot last week with a 90-38 victory over Centerville. Ethan Patterson led the way with 23 points and Kasen Bailey was right behind with 21. The team assisted on 17 of 31 field goals. The Dutch are 2-0 and squeaked out a 64-61 victory over Indianola on Friday. Grant Nelson and Parker Elder are early season leaders with 33 and 31 points, respectively.
Last winter the Dutch finished 19-6 and Demon Head Coach Collin Stark is excited about the challenge. “Our program is at the stage where we want to play these type of games and I think our guys get excited for it. Pella has a big reputation and I am looking forward to this early season test.”
This is the first meeting between these two schools in six years. The girls’ game is an early start at 5:30 p.m. tonight in Washington with the boys’ to follow. Listen to all of the action on FM 106.1 KCII starting around 5 p.m.
