Iowa City Regina is 2-0 on the young season after a 58-55 win over Wilton in Iowa City Friday. In the victory over the Beavers, the Regals had four in double figures, led by Annie Gahan with 18 points. For the season, the Regals are led by Gahan at 20 points per game. She also leads the Regals at six boards per contest. Grace Gaarde is the team leader with three assists. This week, Mid-Prairie head coach Danny Hershberger spoke about Regina. “Regina is another one of those teams that is going to play pressure defense. They like to play a tough man defense. They are going to put pressure on your guards to make good passes. We’re going to have to focus on our fundamentals and take care of the basketball. Offensively they have a couple of players who are athletic, can shoot and can get to the basket to create some issues.”

These two teams met twice a season ago with the Regals sweeping the series 46-34 in Iowa City and 32-29 in Wellman.

The Mid-Prairie boys are 1-1 on the campaign entering Tuesday off of a dominating 54-25 win at Tipton Friday. The Golden Hawks had three reach double figures led by Carter Harmsen’s 17 points. On the season, Mid-Prairie is led by Harmsen at 27 points per game. He’s also the leader on the glass at 10 boards per contest. Will Cavanagh leads the Hawks at 5 assists per game. Iowa City Regina comes into the night with an overall record of 1-1 after a 62-48 win over Wilton in Iowa City Friday. In the victory over the Beavers, the Regals were led by 42 points from Ashton Cook. On the season, Cook leads the Regals at 32 points per game. Cook also leads the team with two assists per contest. Charlie Crigger leads Regina on the glass at five rebounds per outing. This week, Mid-Prairie head coach Daren Lambert broke down the matchup with the Regals. “You know they are always going to be an athletic and well coached bunch. They have a new coaching staff this year so they may be doing some different things. Our guys have confidence and they want to go out and compete against them. They have the Cook kid who is a great athlete and scorer, had a great season as quarterback of their state championship football team and is having a good start to basketball. They also have a couple of shooters on the outside. Ultimately, we just need to keep building on what we have done and take care of our business and push forward. It’s going to come down to good offensive possessions with good shots and following that up with great defense, forcing them into difficult shots and holding them to just one look. It’s all the little things that we need to do throughout the game to put ourselves on top.”

Regina swept both meetings with Mid-Prairie last year, winning 65-47 in Iowa City and 61-48 in Wellman. The Regals have won 22 in a row in the series with Mid-Prairie’s last win coming in January of 2010.
