A Kalona mobile home is considered a total loss after a fire was caused by a lit, unattended candle Friday afternoon.
Kalona Fire Chief Jerry Zahradnek says 19 firefighters responded to the initial call at 2318 133rd Street about 4:00 p.m. and had the fire under control in about 20 minutes. He says the fire was contained to a bedroom and bathroom, but he considers the home a total loss due to smoke and heat damage. He estimates the value of the mobile home at about $20,000.
Zahradnek says four people were home at the time of the fire and all were evacuated with no injuries. The American Red Cross was called in to assist the family.
Zahradnek says firefighters were on the scene for about 90 minutes. The Riverside Fire Department, Wellman Fire and Rescue, Kalona QRS, Washington County Ambulance and Alliant Energy also responded.
