If your home is displaying a live Christmas tree this holiday season, don’t forget the water.
Ainsworth Fire Chief Waylon Schultz says live Christmas trees require watering to avoid it becoming a fire hazard, “If you’re doing the real Christmas tree, make sure it stays watered. If you see it start to dry out with needles turning brown, you have to be very cautious when turning on the lights decorating the tree. Once they (needles) get dry, they could ignite pretty fast from any kind of heat.”
Schultz urges residents to add water daily to your tree, and keep it at least three feet away from any heat source. He also advises when having holiday lights displays to watch your use of multiple extension cords and avoid plugging too many items into power strips, which could cause circuits to be overloaded and could lead to a fire.
