A garden shed was gutted by an early morning fire Sunday in Kalona.
Kalona Fire Chief Jerry Zahradnek says they were called to 1261 Nutmeg Avenue shortly after 2:30 a.m. to find flames coming from a 10-by-14-foot structure that housed bicycles, garden tools and other items. He says the building is still standing, but over $10,000 worth of contents inside were damaged or destroyed.
Firefighters were on the scene for about an hour and there were no injuries. Zahradnek says the garden shed was located about 10 feet from the resident’s mobile home, but the fire was contained to the shed. He says the cause of the fire is yet to be determined, but there was a space heater running inside the shed at the time of the incident.
Kalona QRS and Washington County Ambulance also responded to the scene.
