The COVID-19 pandemic has led to an increased number of people facing food insecurity which has led to more people seeking help at local food pantries.
Lord’s Pantry in Sigourney is experiencing the same trend. Volunteer Coordinator Tami Gilliland says not only has she seen the number of people in need double from last year, they’re also seeing larger families accessing their food pantry, “Normally we would serve 24 families typically and I have noticed, not only have the number of families increased by that much(doubled), we’re not seeing families of two or four, we’re seeing families of six, 10, 12 in a household.”
Gilliland says that can quickly diminish their supply of food at the pantry, but they’ve had no trouble restocking their shelves. She says what they really need is more donations of personal hygiene products. The Lord’s Pantry is one of the recipients of KCII’s 18th annual Caring Christmas Food Drive. You can find more information on the drive and how you can donate online at kciiradio.com.
