A Washington home is considered a total loss after an explosion occurred early Monday morning.

KCII reported live on scene at about 5 a.m. Monday as the Washington and Ainsworth fire departments were extinguishing a fire from an explosion that occurred at 1114 East Washington Street. Traffic was blocked between North 11th and 12th avenues as crews responded and investigated the incident. According to Washington Fire Chief Brendan DeLong, the Washington County Communications Center received multiple reports of a home explosion at about 4 a.m. Upon arrival emergency crews found the two occupants in the home had been injured and both were treated at the scene and were transported to Washington County Hospital and eventually transferred to University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics.

DeLong says reports were also received of damage to property as far as a city block away. The State Fire Marshal’s Office is assisting the investigation, and no additional information is available at this time. Washington Police Department, Washington County Ambulance Service, Washington Public Works, Iowa Department of Transportation, and Alliant Energy also assisted at the scene.
