Iowa driver’s licenses will be subject to expiration dates beginning tomorrow, in accordance with Governor Kim Reynolds’ COVID-19 disaster emergency proclamation.

The governor’s proclamation stated that noncommercial Iowa driver’s licenses expired between January 16, 2020 and January 8, 2021 could still be used for driving purposes. The suspension of enforcement of expired licenses also ends Saturday. Motorists should note that all driver’s licenses have a 60-day grace period following the printed expiration date that allows it to be used for driving purposes. This means that for licenses that expired beginning in mid November, drivers still have some time to renew. The Iowa Department of Transportation notes that it may take a few weeks to get an appointment to renew a license. At the Washington County Treasurer’s Office, driver’s license services are currently offered by appointment only, and access to the motor vehicle and property tax departments is limited to two customers at a time.
