Washington area residents have a couple days left to dispose of their live Christmas trees.
The city is accepting tree drop offs on the southeast corner of the downtown square through tomorrow, and those who can’t drop off their tree downtown can leave it on their residential street corner for city employees to pick up. City Maintenance and Construction Superintendent JJ Bell asks residents not to place trees near fire hydrants, and all trees will then be taken to the city’s brush pile. Residents can also consider environmentally friendly ways to recycle their Christmas trees, like placing one in a fish habitat, or setting it out in a pasture or along forest edges to provide a shrubby habitat for birds or rabbits. If the property is not your own you should be sure to ask permission first, and never burn your tree in a fireplace or wood stove as dry evergreens can explode and cause a house fire.
