A happy bus ride home followed a pair of victories for the Sigourney basketball teams on Friday when they traveled to Victor and downed HLV in a South Iowa Cedar League doubleheader.
The Savage girls trailed 11-9 after one, but a monstrous second quarter outscoring the Warriors 18-4 put them up by 12 at the break. That period proved to be the difference with the second half being a stalemate and the Savages came out on top 46-34. Kaylee Weber went off for 26 points to lead the offense. Head Coach Zach Tremmel broke down the successful second quarter. “We took care of the ball and executed our offense really well. We knocked down some shots and I thought that was the best quarter we have played all year.” They turned around on Saturday and hung on against Pekin winning 40-37. After the pair of games, Sigourney has an 8-3 overall record and 4-2 in the league.
The Savage boys won their second straight by edging the Warriors 48-47. HLV had a chance to sink three free throws with no time remaining to win, but could only make one and the Savages survived. Josh Mohr led the team with 16 points and Ethan Shifflett added 15. Sigourney then lost to Pekin 73-36 the next night and sit at 3-6 overall, 2-5 in the SICL. Both Savage teams travel to Wayland tonight for an area doubleheader against WACO.
