The Hillcrest Academy boys basketball team completed a season sweep of Columbus on Friday with a 65-27 win at Hillcrest Union. The Wildcats scored the first four points of the game, but from there it was all Ravens as they went on a 16-2 run that turned into a 25-5 run that ultimately ended up being a 37-9 run that gave Hillcrest a 24 point halftime lead. Things continued the same way in the second half with the Ravens opening the third on a 7-0 run, enacting the continuous clock late in the frame. After the game Hillcrest head coach Dwight Gingerich talked about the impressive performance. “Offensively we got the ball moving. Defensively we turned up the pressure and that worked in our favor. We were able to transition score and got them playing at an uncomfortable pace. It never hurts when Eli Ours is shooting the ball again the way he was tonight. That makes a lot of difference. Part of that is ball movement. We’re getting a lot of people involved offensively and when that happens people are going to have open looks.”
The Ravens controlled the game in all aspects, going 10 of 16 from three point land and shooting above 50% from the floor for the game. They outrebounded the Wildcats by 13 and won the turnover battle 19-9. Eli Ours was unconscious from the floor, finishing with a game high 25 points including seven of eight beyond the arc. John Hughes finished with a double double 12 points and 10 rebounds, in total, 10 Ravens scored in the win. The Wildcats were led by Owen Watson’s 10 points. Hillcrest has now won eight of their last nine, improving their record to 10-5 for the year, with the loss Columbus falls to 1-13.
