As the second U.S. Senate impeachment trial for former President Donald Trump is scheduled for February 9th, Senator Charles Grassley (R) argues whether an impeachment trial should be held for a private citizen.
Grassley tells KCII that since he will be a juror in the impeachment trial he won’t give an inclination as to whether Trump should be convicted for inciting the January 6th attack at the U.S. Capitol. He does believe that security should be tightened at the Capitol, and that those who broke into the building should be held responsible, “I can’t believe that people would be so stupid to bust into a federal building and then take pictures of themselves in there, or they surely had to know they were going to be on cameras that are all over the building so that they could be easily identified. But they did it and I can’t understand that people would be that stupid.”
Questioning the constitutionality of holding an impeachment trial for a former president, Grassley also points out that Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts will not be presiding over this trial.
