volunteers-needed

Crooked Creek Days in Winfield could be cancelled this August, but not because of the pandemic.

Deputy City Clerk Lisa Rees says the three-day event, which started in 1994, is facing cancellation this year because they don’t have enough volunteers to form a planning committee, “A good committee would be five people, as long as you’ve got a group of friends who can work together and agree on things, then you can do it. But then also coming up with different ideas of community events to do and how are you going to pay for it, which leads into running the fundraisers to pay for the events.”

Rees says they are at a critical stage for getting enough volunteers in time to decide the fate of this year’s event. She says they may have until the end of March to make the final call because that’s when they would need enough money to pay towards the fireworks display. Those interested in volunteering can call Winfield City Hall.

Rees says last year’s Crooked Creek Days were held despite COVID-19, but attendance was greatly reduced, which has impacted funding for this year’s event. Annual expenses for the festivities have been as much as $24,000 including $10,000 for fireworks.
