Starting fast and keeping the foot on the gas was a recipe for success for the Hillcrest Academy boys’ basketball team last night when they stomped their way to a 60-25 Southeast Iowa Super Conference win over Highland in Kalona.

As heard on KCII, the Ravens worked inside-out against the Huskie 2-3-zone and found themselves up 18-2 after one. Finding any continuity offensively was a struggle for a Highland team that hit the court for the first time in two weeks and were without a few key players. The score was 31-8 at the break and the lead continue to grow in the final two quarters with the Ravens’ bench players seeing significant time. Production was coming from all over with 10 Hillcrest players getting in the score column led by Eli Ours’ 21 points. The senior knocked down five triples on the evening. John Hughes recorded nine points and Noah Miller added seven. Chase Schultz led the Huskies with seven points.

Hillcrest Academy Head Coach Dwight Gingerich tells KCII Sports he challenged the team pregame and they responded well. “The challenge was to come out and keep the intensity high for the entire game. I thought we did a good job of that. We were able to apply some pressure and create some offense with our defense. We were able to get a big spurt to close out the first quarter and that continued to build throughout the game.”

The Ravens improve to 11-6 overall and are set to travel to Lone Tree tomorrow. The Huskies are now 3-8 and entertain the Lions today.
