With six of their 11 losses being single-digit affairs, the WACO girls’ basketball team has been on the cusp of a breakthrough performance. On Monday they got just that. Welcoming a 13-win Van Buren squad to Wayland, WACO looked like the superior team all night and turned some heads in a 68-43 rout.
WACO laid the groundwork for a successful outing early, as the Warriors stormed out to a 16-2 advantage after one and led 30-17 at the break. Any chance of a Van Buren comeback was eliminated in the third with a 20-9 quarter in favor of the home team that led to the 25-point beatdown. WACO’s Ellah Kissell brought the offense with 21 points and Aubri Garnsey added 18. Morgan Graber was also in double figures with 15 points and Grace Coble snagged 10 boards. Van Buren (13-4) star Isabel Manning was her usual productive self with 25 points, but they had limited contributions elsewhere by shooting just 24% as a team.
WACO followed up that night with a 49-41 victory over Danville on Tuesday to improve to 7-11. They travel to Central Lee (10-8) tomorrow.
