Students at Mid-Prairie West Elementary are “racing” to 100 cans of food to benefit the Wellman Food Bank.

Pre-school teacher Lori Miller says in celebration of the building’s 100th day of school  January 29th, each student was challenged to collect five non-perishable food items to help those in need, “Our community really supports us in a variety of ways, so we like to annually hold a food drive and we thought it would be a good way, especially during these COVID times that have been tough for families. So, as part of that we’re asking families to donate five items to each student during our food drive to support our community.”

Miller says the students form a real sense of pride and empathy for helping others as they collect canned goods, boxed meals including macaroni and cheese, and toiletries. Donations from the general public can be made by contacting West Elementary at 319-646-2984.  Miller says the food drive ends Friday.
