Youth looking to learn about ice fishing will have to wait another week for the free clinic hosted by Washington County Conservation.

Naturalist Megan Jorgensen says the weather earlier this week coupled with temperatures that were too warm for good ice thickness has pushed the program to next Saturday, February 13th. She says young anglers will get their own ice fishing pole, an ice scoop with their own bucket, and a fishing lure, “They’ll also get the opportunity to use sonar equipment. For ice fishing, the common trend to use what is called a Vexilar, or camera, that you stick down into the hole (in the ice) and tell you where the fish are and when they’re biting and actually see when the fish are coming up to your hook.”

Jorgensen says the kids will also learn ice fishing safety, how to care for their equipment and hear from conservation and Department of Natural Resources staff members about careers in conservation. Jorgensen says the clinic is currently full and adds that their ice fishing tournament that was scheduled for February 20th has been cancelled due to lack of participation.
