Thursday is the regular season home finale for the Mid-Prairie boys and girls basketball teams when they host the West Branch Bears in a River Valley Conference doubleheader. The Golden Hawk girls come into the night with a 10-10 overall record, 9-9 in the RVC. Last time out, they were winners at Camanche Monday 56-34 with Maddie Nonnenmann scoring 16 and Phelan Hostetler and Amara Jones each with 10. On the season Nonnenmann leads the way for Mid-Prairie at 14 points and seven rebounds per game. Amara Jones is averaging four assists and three steals per night.
West Branch comes into the night with a 16-1 overall record. The Bears are ranked No. 3 in class 2A in the latest poll from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. Tuesday they were 63-45 winners against Iowa City Regina with Sasha Koenig and Lexie Peak each putting up 16 points. For the year, Koenig leads the Bears and River Valley at 21 points per game to go along with five assists and three steals per night. Delaynie Luneckas leads the Bears on the glass with nine boards per game. These two teams met in West Branch January 8th with the Bears winning 66-29. West Branch has won seven straight over Mid-Prairie.
The Golden Hawk boys enter play on a four game winning streak with a 13-6 overall record, they are 13-4 in the River Valley Conference. They beat Durant in Wellman Tuesday 56-38 with Aidan Rath putting up 22 points. Carter Harmsen leads Mid-Prairie at 19 points and seven rebounds per game. Jack Pennington averages five assists and two steals per contest.
West Branch is 16-1 on the season and in league play after a 67-53 win at Iowa City Regina on Monday. Simon Palmer led the Bears with 18 points. West Branch is ranked 10th in this week’s class 2A poll from the Iowa Associated Press. For the year, the Bears are led by Palmer’s 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists per night. These two teams met in January in West Branch with the Bears winning 44-41. The Bears have won 12 of the last 13 in the series.
