Step one of the Class 1A regional journey was checked off the list last night for the Winfield-Mt. Union girls’ basketball team when they upended Holy Trinity 53-42 in a first round home bout.

A methodical approach paid dividends for the Wolves with the home team up 10-7 after one and 26-21 at the break. A 17-12 third quarter stretched the advantage out to double digits and the Crusaders (5-17) could never get over the hump. The Wolves shot 42% from the floor and were led by Farrah Nelson with 14 points. The senior hauled in a monstrous 16 rebounds including 10 of those on the offensive end. Kyndal Townsley recorded 12 points and Jami Wilkerson added eight.
