Back in December the Mid-Prairie boys’ basketball team exorcised some demons by downing Iowa City Regina for the first time in 23 tries. On Saturday, the Golden Hawks started up a win streak of their own against the Regals by managing the regular season sweep with a 59-36 win on the road.
As heard on KCII, Aidan Rath was on a mission for the Hawks by scoring the game’s first six points and had 10 at the break in just nine minutes of play. Mid-Prairie held a slight 9-6 lead after one and 23-17 at intermission. The offense picked up in the third with a 22-10 quarter that led to the 23-point victory. Rath finished with a team-high 16 points and 10 rebounds. Carter Harmsen scored 11 of his 15 points in the second half. Ashton Cook led the Regals (7-11) with 17 points. The Golden Hawks shot 46% from the floor and were plus-five in the turnover margin. Head Coach Daren Lambert tells KCII Sports Rath is playing his best ball at the right time. “In the last week he has had some big games. Sometimes with these Saturday games with it being out of the norm you be tired so our plan was to go through him. He started fast and we let him carry us throughout that first half for us.”
Mid-Prairie closes the regular season second in the River Valley Conference South division with a 14-5 league mark and 14-7 overall. They will face West Liberty (3-15) in a class 2A district semifinal on Thursday.
