Trying to get one step closer to the state tournament is the plan for the Sigourney girls’ basketball team tonight when they host Wayne for a class 1A regional quarterfinal.

The Savages are 17-5 and had little trouble in a 55-23 playoff opening win over Moulton-Udell on Thursday. Kaylee Weber led the team with 15 points and averages 19.2 a night to go along with 9.6 rebounds. Carly Goodwin has added 8.5 points and 1.6 assists a game this season. Wayne is 14-7 out of the Pride of Iowa Conference and defeated Twin Cedars 50-24 last week. The Savages will have to find a way to slow down Emily Jones. The 5’9’’ junior registers 22.7 points a game while shooting 36% from deep. She also averages 6.9 boards and Maddy Wood chips in with 8.2 and 9.3 a night. Savage Head Coach Zach Tremmel tells KCII Sports the Falcons start and stop with Jones. “When you have a girl that averages 23 points a game it is apparent they have some skill, I don’t care what type of league you play in. She is going to be a major focal point for us and we will be ready to roll.” Wayne has been prone to the turnover bug with 20 miscues a contest.

The playoff matchup gets underway at 6 p.m. tonight in Sigourney. Listen to the live play-by-play on FM 106.1 KCII and kciiradio.com.
