A barn just north of Riverside was destroyed by a fire Wednesday afternoon.

Riverside Fire Chief Chad Smothers says they were called to 1155 Tupelo Boulevard at about 12:30 p.m. to discover the barn fully engulfed in flames. He says some sheep and chickens were killed in the blaze, but firefighters were also able to evacuate several hogs from the building.

Smothers says there were no injuries to firefighters or civilians and the barn was a total loss. There were heat lamps in use inside the barn, but he says the cause of the fire is unknown at this time. He says firefighters were able to prevent fire from spreading to another barn about 20 yards away.

The Kalona Fire Department also responded to the scene. Smothers says a second alarm was sounded to bring in firefighters from Wellman, Ainsworth and Lone Tree, but crews were cancelled when Riverside and Kalona crews were able to get the fire under control.
