A bill has passed a Senate subcommittee that would require transgender people in Iowa schools to use bathrooms that correspond to their biological sex.

Senate File 224 passed an education subcommittee with two Republicans in support and one Democrat opposed last week. It now is eligible for consideration by the full Senate Education Committee. District 42 Senator Jeff Reichman (R) comments on whether this legislation would make Iowa schools a less welcome place for transgender students and staff, “You know I think we have to consider everybody’s rights here. We need to consider everybody, so there’s other people to consider in this factor that are being made to feel uncomfortable. So we’re talking about everybody’s rights here and we definitely need to balance that out.”

The Iowa Public Health Association, Iowa Chamber Alliance, American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa, Iowa Safe Schools, Technology Association of Iowa, and Iowa State Education Association among other organizations have all filed against the bill, while the Family Leader Foundation and Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition have filed in support.
