Day two of the Iowa High School State Wrestling Tournament is a wrap and a pair of Class 1A area wrestlers have secured a spot on the podium in Des Moines.
Highland’s Easton Schlabaugh and Bryce Thompson had a pair of wins on Friday to keep their season alive. Schlabaugh opened the day at 106 lbs in the second round consolation match with a 5-2 decision victory over Easton Kroll of Wapsie Valley and then turned around for a 4-2 win over Mount Ayr’s Drew Ehlen to move to 3-1 in the tournament. Thompson started the morning in the winners bracket at 113 lbs, but dropped a 5-2 decision to Donovan Hanson of West Bend in the quarterfinals. The senior bounced back for 11-3 and 4-3 wins over Colfax-Mingo’s Noah Strohmeyer and Don Bosco’s Andrew Kimball to advance to day three at Wells Fargo Arena.
Cade Molyneux of Sigourney-Keota had his run come to a close after falling by an 11-2 major decision in the second round consolation match to Carson Hartz of Columbus Catholic. Molyneux finished 1-2 in the state event at 170 lbs.
Thompson and Schlabaugh will close out the tournament in the consolations semifinals and finals this morning at 10 a.m. in Des Moines. Both Huskies can place as high as third and no lower than sixth. Listen to KCII throughout the day for updates.
