In a normal year, only one team across four classes can finish the basketball season with a win. As everyone knows though, this year was anything but normal and many teams had the potential to end the season in the win column because of it. The Iowa High School Athletic Association announced that any team eliminated from the playoffs could makeup any games that were lost in the pandemic filled season as long as they were played before the state tournament. The WACO boys took advantage of the opportunity last week and had a pair of contests against Van Buren to end the campaign with two victories.
On Tuesday the Warriors traveled to Keosauqua and got out to a rough start trailing 16-4 after one, but quickly settled in for a 21-10 second to pave the way for a 51-50 win. Vincent Jones paced the team with 14 points while Hunter Hughes and Simeon Reichenbach added 12 each. WACO was minus six in the turnover margin, but out rebounded their opponent 41-26.
Two days later, Wayland was the destination for the Southeast Iowa Super Conference showdown and WACO pulled away for a 68-56 win. They once again got out to a slow start with a 14-9 deficit after one, but a monstrous 26-9 second in favor of the home team set up the season ending victory. Hughes made 10 of 12 free throws to finish with a game-high 20 points and Isaac Oswald tallied 12.
WACO officially ends the campaign 6-18 says goodbye to a pair of seniors in Will Edeker and Kolton Connelly.
