The City of Kalona could receive up to $350,000 from the $1.9 trillion dollar COVID-19 stimulus bill President Joe Biden signed into law last week.

The allocation is part of the $350 billion designated in the legislative package to replenish tax revenue collections that decreased during the pandemic for state and local governments. The allocation formula mostly relies on the number of unemployed people in each state at the end of 2020. City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh says when Kalona will receive any of the projected funding is yet to be determined, “That’s a great question. We have not as of today (Monday) seen anything other than that there is money carved out through the package that would ultimately end up in the community’s hands. Everything’s been preliminary-based so far, we haven’t had anything from either the League of Cities or the Department of Management for the State of Iowa who we more than likely would hear from on that.”

Schlabaugh says while the city is in good shape financially, the extra $350,000 would go a long way to getting a jumpstart on select capital improvement projects that would be publically beneficial and have a good impact on the citizens of Kalona. Among other Washington County cities, Riverside could get $140,000, Wellman $190,000, Crawfordsville $40,000, Ainsworth $80,000, Brighton $90,000, West Chester $20,000 and Washington $1 million. Iowa is projected to receive about $1.38 billion for the state government, $612 million for counties, and $153 million in state capital projects.
