Area small class football teams recently got a sneak peek at their opponents for the 2021-22 seasons when the Iowa High School Athletic Association released the new district assignments.
In 8-player, Winfield-Mt. Union, Lone Tree, and WACO will once again be paired up together in district 6 along with English Valleys, HLV, Iowa Valley, New London, and Tri-County. There are 72 teams in 8-player with 32 making the playoffs including the top three from each district and two at-large berths. Highland and Columbus Community will be in Class A District 5 along with Alburnett, Lisbon, North Cedar, Pekin, and Wapello. This class that features 56 teams will also have a 32-team playoff bracket with the top four from each district receiving bids. Defending Class 1A state semifinalist Sigourney-Keota saw a shake up in their district 6, as they are paired up with Central Decatur, Pella Christian, Pleasantville, Cardinal, and Van Buren. Class 1A has 48 teams and the top four from each district makeup a 32-team bracket.
Teams in Class 2A, 1A, A, and 8-player will have eight regular season games, but will be permitted to play a ninth if they miss the postseason. Full schedules for all teams will be released in April.
