The two year wait was extended one more day than planned, but the drought comes to an end tonight for Washington track fans. Originally scheduled for last night, the first meet for the Washington boys since 2019 was moved to today when they host the Steve Roth Washington Relays.

No one has missed the races around the track more than long time head coach Steve Roth. “We are very excited. We have some outstanding teams coming and hopefully Mother Nature can cooperate. My crew does an outstanding job and gets the meet moving. We are ready to get things going.”

The meet is boys only and will feature 22 teams across three classes including area schools Mid-Prairie, Columbus Community, Highland, WACO, and Winfield-Mt. Union. Having this meet named after him is something Roth does not take lightly. “It means the world to me and I am very humbled by it. It is one of the neatest things that has happened to me in my coaching and teaching career. I take a lot of pride in it, I take pride in Case Field, and I take pride in my kids. It is going to be a nice experience.”

All of the action gets started at 3:30 p.m. tonight at Case Field in Washington. Fans are asked to wear masks and the infield is off limits. Further guidelines will be enforced including sanitizing blocks and batons as well as throwers retrieving their own shot and disc.
