It was a night full of track at Case Field on Friday with 22 schools flocking to Washington for the annual Steve Roth Relays to kick off the 2021 season.
The boys only meet was divided into three classes with Washington being in the A division and placing sixth out of eight teams with 47 points while Iowa City High claimed first with 128 points. The distance medley relay team of Reece Mayer, Wyatt Stout, Elijah Morris, and Lance Sobaski claimed first place in 3:46.09. Sobaski credited his teammates for putting him in good position to close out the win in the anchor leg. “Reece and Wyatt ran great splits and then Elijah started in third, but ended in second when he handed me the baton. That is exactly where I wanted to be because I can just focus on chasing the front guy. The last 200 meters I really kicked it in and gave myself a shot to win and that is what happened.” Second place Demon performances included Sobaski in the 3200m (9:58), Kael Adam in the discus (128’5’’), and the sprint medley relay (1:39).
