U.S. Congresswoman Marianette Miller-Meeks received word of Democratic opponent Rita Hart withdrawing her contest of the general election results while visiting Washington Wednesday afternoon.

Hart stated Wednesday that the “toxic campaign of political disinformation to attack the constitutional review of the closest congressional race in 100 years has effectively silenced the voices of Iowans.” She withdrew her contest to the House Administration Committee days after her legal counsel urged Congress to “count every vote” and hours after House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy rallied with Miller-Meeks in Davenport. While visiting the Washington County Public Health Department Wednesday, the representative for Iowa’s 2nd District shares her reaction, “Tremendous relief and then I just want to express my gratitude to Rita Hart. I’ve been in that position, I know how difficult this is but I also think that for the State of Iowa, for election integrity and confidence in our election system, that she did the right thing. This is something that should be decided in states, by state law, which has been my contention all along.”

Miller-Meeks defeated Hart by six votes in a state-certified election, which included a recount after Hart initially fell 47 votes behind in the unofficial results.
