Momentum for the Washington girls’ soccer program was at an all-time high at the conclusion of the 2019 season.
The Demons were coming off of an 8-9 campaign, more wins than their previous five seasons combined and they were bringing everyone back in what was shaping up to be a special 2020 season. The pandemic then did its thing and put a kibosh on the year. That momentum quickly turned into disappointment, but first year head coach Steven Caulk tells KCII Sports the disappointment of a lost 2020 has added to the excitement of finally getting back on the pitch in 2021. “I think there is more excitement especially for the returning players. There was a lot of disappointment last season and we are seeing an uptick in enthusiasm right now. That is something that we want to channel and use as a positive this year.” While a few players graduated last year, the Demons bring back loads of experience including a dynamic one-two punch in Trina Griffin and Greta Rothe. In 2019, Griffin led the Southeast Conference with 19 goals and Rothe was also top five with 13.
Washington opens the season tonight at Oskaloosa. The game will be at Lacey Sports Complex and is set to kick off at 5:30 p.m.
