“The Roaring 20’s” is the theme for the 2021 Prom tonight at Highland High School.

Doors of the high school gymnasium open to the public at 7 p.m. with the grand march starting at 7:30. Masks are still required for anyone entering a district building, but Superintendent Ken Crawford says some exceptions are in place for students during prom as well as graduation, “When kids do their promenade and get to a certain spot when they can take a picture, they can take their masks down and that makes sense. We felt if they can take their picture, put their mask back on, we should still be ok. Same way with graduation. When they walk across the stage, they can take their mask down, get their pictures with their parents or get their diploma and stuff like that without a mask on, we felt that’s something parents would appreciate and kind of made sense at the time.”

The dance will immediately follow the grand march and continues until 11 p.m. Post Prom festivities follow from midnight to 5 a.m. Sunday at the high school. Post prom activities include a mechanical bull (Tough Entertainment), tarot readings (Riverside Iowa Paranormal group), and a local hypnotist. Last year’s prom was delayed by COVID-19 to June 12th, 2020 and was scaled back including restrictions on out-of-district guests. There are no limits for non-Highland student guests this year.
