Washington High School students rehearse for “Schoolhouse Rock: Live!”
“I’m Just a Bill,” “Conjunction Junction,” and other familiar tunes will be sung at the Washington Area Performing Arts & Events Center this weekend during the high school’s production of “Schoolhouse Rock: Live!”
This musical features 21 songs from the animated education program in a plot that follows Tom, played by senior Hunter Rarick, who is nervous about his first day of teaching. He turns on his television to “Schoolhouse Rock” when the characters come alive and help him prepare for his lesson. Director and Washington High School alum Brett Pierson (‘04) shares how this musical has been an exciting endeavor not just for the students, “Particularly my dad, the second I brought this up he immediately started singing one of the songs, and it’s one of the songs in the show so I’m sure they’ll be fighting him for the stage while he’s out in the audience singing right along with it. Which is the other appeal of this all, is that it is a very fun show for young kids that can come and they’ll love all of the action going on stage, they’ll like the songs. And then their parents will have that nostalgia factor and their grandparents are going to be able to sit back and think as it’s mentioned in the show, ‘between bowls of Cocoa Puffs,’ learning about grammar, learning about social studies, and all those opportunities.”
Performances of “Schoolhouse Rock: Live!” are at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow and Saturday and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, with tickets sold at the door at $10 for adults and $5 for children. Masks are required for attendees, while the performers will be allowed to take their masks off when they take the stage. You can hear more about the musical during today’s Halcyon House Washington Page program on air and at kciiradio.com.
