Area residents young and old can enjoy some familiar tunes about grammar, math, physics, and more as the Washington High School performs “Schoolhouse Rock: Live!”

There are two performances left for the cartoon-jukebox musical at 7:30 p.m. tonight and 2:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Washington Area Performing Arts and Events Center. Senior Hunter Rarick plays the lead character Tom, a nervous teacher who turns on his television to see the Schoolhouse Rock characters come to life and help him prepare for his first day of school.

Rarick shares how the musical exposed him to new songs, “The most iconic ones to me were probably ‘I’m Just a Bill,’ and ‘Conjunction Junction.’ Those were the two that I knew going in, but now that we’ve gone throughout the songs and I know all of them I think I really like ‘The Tale of Mr. Morton,’ which I didn’t know about that song at first. I didn’t know about it until this but I really like it.”

Senior Hannah Rees plays one of the cartoon figments of Tom’s imagination, Dori, and she shares one of her favorite numbers, “The song about gravity, I love that song. It just makes me smile the entire time, and thankfully it fits with the song. So I can smile the entire time but I really enjoy that song.”

Tickets for “Schoolhouse Rock: Live!” are $10 for adults and $5 for children, and attendees must wear masks, while the cast has been given permission to take their masks off while on stage.
