After capturing their first meet win in four years on Thursday, the Columbus Community boys’ track team did not have to wait long this time to take another victory lap, as the Wildcats reigned supreme in the Sigourney Relays last night.
The Wildcats won their second straight by compiling 94 points that bested the 11 team field including five other area schools. Two events took home gold including Isaac Acosta in the 1600m (4:44) and Mason Hodges in the discus (137’8’’). Kaden Amigon was second in the 100m (11.30) and 200m (23.30) and picked up a third place finish in the long jump (18’4’’). Other second place events included Freddy Vergara in the 3200m (10:46), the 4x100m (45.70), and 4x800m relay (9:26). Other area schools in the standings included Highland sixth with 52 points, Winfield-Mt. Union seventh with 51 points, Sigourney eighth with 39 points, Keota ninth with 37, and WACO 11th with 17. The sprint relays paid dividends for the Huskies winning the 4x100m (45.50) and 4x200m (1:35) while Devin Lovetinsky was second in the discus (124’8.75’’) and shot put (42’4’’). The Wolves’ Dane Sweezer had a pair of runner-up races in the 100m hurdles (16.30) and 400m hurdles (57.80). The host Savages enjoyed one champion in the high jump with Gavin Sereg leaping 5’10’’ and Keota’s Bryce Greiner had the farthest heave in the shot put (43’6.5’’). WACO’s shuttle hurdle relay was second (1:10).
The Savage girls tied with Highland in fourth by compiling 56 points and Pekin ran away with the title with 169. Rain Barthelman showed off for the home crowd by winning the 400m hurdles (1:15.3) and Kaylee Weber was second in the shot (36’9.25’’). Highland freshman Sarah Burton continues to feast winning the 100m (13.50) and long jump (14’9.5’’). WACO placed seventh out of 12 with 45 points, Columbus ninth with 22, WMU 10th with 15, and Keota had two points. The Warriors shuttle hurdle relay bested the whole field (1:14) and Zoey Dennler was second in the 400m hurdles (1:15.5). Olivia Carrier was second for Columbus in the 100m (13.80), Morgan Grelk was fourth for WMU in the 400m hurdles (1:18), and Keota’s Madison Scott was fifth in the 100m (14.30).
