The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys and girls soccer teams are back on the pitch Tuesday when they welcome West Liberty to Wellman.
The Mid-Prairie boys come into the match with an 8-2 overall record after an 8-0 win over Highland on Monday behind five goals from Jack Pennington. The Hawks are ranked No. 5 in class 1A in the latest poll from the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association. On the year, the Golden Hawks are led by Pennington and Owen Trimpe, each with 13 goals. Ethan Trimpe holds the team lead with eight assists.
West Liberty stands at 9-3 on the season. They were beaten by Clinton last week 3-1 in their last match. The Comets are ranked No. 4 in the latest poll from the IHSSCA. On the year they are led by Jahsiah Galvan’s 24 goals and 11 assists. The Comets have won the last 12 matches in the series including a 3-0 victory in 2019.
The Mid-Prairie girls are 7-5 on the season. They were beaten at Williamsburg 3-0 in their last match. On the season the Hawks are led by Esther Hughes with 17 goals, Kaitlin Martin has five assists and in goal Emily Swartzentruber has compiled 58 saves and a 73.4% save percentage.
West Liberty is 3-4 on the season. They won 1-0 at Wapello in their last match. For the season, the Comets are led by Sailor Hall with four goals, and Monica Morales with two assists. In goal Victoria Machado has made 22 saves with a 71% save percentage. West Liberty has won four of the last five meetings between these two schools, with the Golden Hawks scoring a 3-1 victory in 2019. Action in the doubleheader starts with the girls game tonight at five in Wellman.
